Why You Get Acne on Your Temples

Temple acne is a small zone with three big possible causes — hair products, accessory contact, and hormones. The fix depends entirely on which one you have.

The temples are one of those small zones that get acne for reasons most people miss because they're not the usual suspects (forehead, cheek, chin). The three most common causes, in order: hair product contact, accessory contact (sunglasses, hats, headbands), and occasionally hormonal patterns.

Hair product migration is the biggest hidden cause. Pomades, hair oils, leave-in conditioners, and styling creams contain ingredients that aren't formulated for skin contact and often include comedogenic agents like coconut oil, lanolin, isopropyl myristate, or heavy silicones. These products migrate downward throughout the day, especially in heat, and deposit at the hairline and temples. The pattern is unmistakable once you look for it: small clogged pores in an arc that follows your hairline, often slightly worse on the side you part your hair to. The fix is either changing to a non-comedogenic styling product or moving the product application away from the temple area.

Accessory friction is the second main cause. Heavy sunglasses, hats, headbands, and even certain headphones rest on the temple area and create acne mechanica. The hallmark is asymmetry — if you always wear sunglasses with the frames sitting heavier on one side, that side breaks out more. Wiping frames with isopropyl alcohol weekly and switching to lighter frames usually clears it within 4-6 weeks.

Hormonal temple acne does exist but is less common than chin/jawline patterns. If your temple breakouts are bilateral, deep, painful, and cyclical, hormones may be involved and a physician can evaluate spironolactone or other approaches.

The conditioner-rinse trick

One of the highest-yield interventions for hairline and temple acne is rinsing your face after rinsing your hair in the shower. Most conditioners contain occlusive emollients (cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, dimethicone, behentrimonium methosulfate) that are great for hair but comedogenic on facial skin. They rinse down your face and chest and deposit there as a thin invisible film.

A 10-second face rinse after conditioner — with cool water, ideally with a gentle cleanser — removes that deposit and dramatically reduces hairline, temple, chest, and upper back breakouts in people whose acne patterns map to product runoff. This single change fixes a surprising percentage of "mystery" acne in those zones.
